INTEGRATION & EMPLOYMENT ACTIONS

In 2007-2008, TACT Hellas successfully undertook two major projects in Athens and Ioannina in support of the Ministry of Employment and Social Security to promote equal opportunity.

The first project took place in Athens. “All for Inclusion” aimed to promote equal opportunity for vulnerable social groups and raise awareness of the virtues of being different. Various seminars and informational workshops were held, including “

"Plan: A Quiet Life", a short film about creating a qualtity life for the disabled. This film benefited both the disabled persons themselves as well as their families. The event contributed significantly towards their confidence, empowerment, and acquisition of social skills. They were given the opportunity to share their emotions and to respond to attitudes and stereotypes surrounding disability. These actions were accompanied by relevant brochures, which also helped the public learn about and understand people with disabilities.

The second project, “A Different Company”, took place in Ioannina. Its purpose was similar to the project in Athens: the promotion of equal opportunity. An educational campaign was carried out for this project which included a documentary about being different: “Human, as in Human”. Though the film was suitable for the general public, it specifically targeted young adults and teens, with whom we had worked on the teams for development. Participants in groups, seminars, and the workshops gained valuable insight and knowledge. The purpose of the experiential workshop, the seminars, and the documentary was ostensibly to develop confidence and empower, as well as dissolve any prejudice and negative attitudes towards people who are different. Our basic goal was not so much to demonstrate how diverse people are (regardless of whether these differences are physical, racial, cultural, religious, etc), but rather to illustrate the fundamental similarities between every human being.

Human, as in Human” was shot on a hand-held camera in Ioannina, and captured scenes from the city and its rich assortment of people. The film unfolds and develops on four levels. In essence, these levels are about the effort people make to fulfill their basic needs.

People who are different alternately seeking acceptance and love.

People who are different attempting to meet their basic needs by seeking security (a home, a job, faith) in order to survive.

People who are different striving to be independent and free; to gain control over their own lives.

People who are different expressing their need to be “alone or together”; to coexist in peace without being violated, to live independently without being alone.

The film closes by emphasizing the beauty of diversity, and the beauty of being human.
